The food safety knowledge of street food vendors and the sanitary conditions of their street food vending environment in the Zululand District, South Africa

Abstract This research sought to evaluate the food safety knowledge of street vendors and sanitary compliance status their vending facilities, Zululand District, South Africa. Data collection was done in a face interview with respondents cross-sectional survey design. collected from 399 randomly selected 200 facilities. Only minority had attended high school (47 %) vast majority (77 them not any training courses. Overall, (76 low only 14 % sites conditions. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that most facilities constitute risk consumers. primarily due possession inadequate vendors, non-compliant infrastructure, monitoring controls by competent authorities. It is recommended that, authorities should implement stalls/caravan system areas adequate sanitation use licensing permit tool ensure control adherence regulations health inspectors be trained on safe handling principles practice.
